Social Media Impersonation Scam

Part of Social Media & Prize Scams

How It Works

A scammer copies your (or someone else's) profile photo and details to create a duplicate social media account, then sends friend/follow requests to your real contacts, eventually using the fake trust to ask them for money or spread further scams.

Real Example

A duplicate Facebook profile using your photos sends friend requests to your family and friends, then messages them claiming an emergency and asking for money transfer.

Red Flags 🚩

  • A "new" friend request from someone you're already connected with
  • Profile has very few posts, mostly recent, with copied photos
  • Quickly moves to asking for money after connecting
  • Mutual friends report receiving odd messages from "you"

Protection Steps 🛡️

  • Report and block duplicate/impersonating profiles immediately.
  • Set profile photos and personal details to private where possible.
  • Warn your contacts if you discover an impersonating account.
  • Verify any money request from a "friend" by calling them directly.
