How It Works
Scammers impersonate celebrities or well-known public figures on social media, announcing a "giveaway" of cash, gadgets, or cryptocurrency. To claim the prize, victims are asked to send a small amount first ("processing" or "verification" fee) or share personal/banking details.
Real Example
A fake account impersonating a popular celebrity posts: "Send ₹500 to this UPI ID to enter and I'll send back ₹50,000 to 10 lucky winners!" No winnings are ever sent.
Red Flags 🚩
- Celebrity account is new, unverified, or has very few followers despite claiming fame
- Giveaway requires sending money first to "participate" or "verify"
- Too-good-to-be-true prize amounts
- Comments section filled with bot-like replies claiming to have "won"
Protection Steps 🛡️
- Real celebrity giveaways never ask participants to pay or send money first.
- Check for the verified badge and follow the celebrity's actual official account.
- Be skeptical of suspiciously generous unsolicited prizes.
- Report fake celebrity accounts to the platform.
