SIM Swap Scam

Part of Banking & Payment Fraud

How It Works

Fraudster collects your personal details, then contacts your telecom provider pretending to be you, requesting a new SIM for your number. Once your number gets transferred to their SIM, they receive your OTPs and banking alerts — and can access your accounts while your phone goes silent.

Real Example

You suddenly lose mobile network for hours. By the time you call your operator, money has already been transferred out of your bank account using OTPs sent to the fraudster's SIM.

Red Flags 🚩

  • Sudden, unexplained loss of network/signal
  • SMS about a SIM swap or number port request you didn't make
  • Unknown calls asking for personal ID details
  • Bank alerts for transactions you didn't do

Protection Steps 🛡️

  • Never share Aadhaar, ID proof details over call/SMS.
  • Contact your telecom operator immediately if signal disappears unexpectedly.
  • Set a PIN/passcode with your telecom provider for SIM changes.
  • Enable transaction alerts and act fast if anything looks unfamiliar.
