Sextortion Scam

Part of Romance & Social Engineering Scams

How It Works

Scammers initiate a seemingly normal video chat or relationship, then either record an intimate video call (sometimes through a hacked app or manipulated media manipulation) or convince the victim to share intimate images. They then threaten to leak the content to family, friends, or social media unless a ransom is paid.

Real Example

A victim is added to a video call by an attractive stranger who quickly turns explicit; the call is secretly recorded. Screenshots are later sent to the victim along with a demand for money, threatening to share them with the victim's entire contact list.

Red Flags 🚩

  • Stranger quickly escalates a video call to be intimate or explicit
  • Call or chat happens through an unfamiliar app pushed by the other person
  • Sudden demand for money after an intimate interaction, threatening exposure
  • Threats to contact family, friends, or employer if payment isn't made

Protection Steps 🛡️

  • Never engage in intimate video calls or share intimate images with strangers met online.
  • If targeted, do not pay — payment rarely stops the threats and may invite more demands.
  • Block the person, take screenshots of all evidence, and report to the cybercrime portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or call 1930.
  • Reach out to a trusted person or counselor — you are the victim, not at fault.
