How It Works
A scammer builds an online relationship through a dating app or social media, often using a fake, attractive profile. After weeks of building trust and affection, they invent an emergency — medical bills, customs fees, a stuck shipment — and ask for money. They may also direct you to a fake "investment" platform.
Real Example
A Bengaluru woman lost ₹5.4 lakh to a scammer posing as an army officer on a dating app, who used emotional manipulation and AI-generated content over several weeks before asking for money.
Red Flags 🚩
- Professes love very quickly, never video calls
- Always has an excuse to avoid meeting in person
- Eventually asks for money, gift cards, or crypto
- Claims to be abroad, in military, or on an oil rig
Protection Steps 🛡️
- Never send money to someone you haven't met in person.
- Reverse image search their profile photos.
- Be suspicious of any online partner who avoids video calls.
- Talk to a trusted friend or family member before sending money.
