How It Works
A scammer, posing as a bank employee, tech support agent, or even a "helpful" stranger, convinces the victim to install a screen-sharing app like AnyDesk or TeamViewer "to fix an issue" or "verify a transaction." Once connected, they can see everything on the screen, including banking apps, and can even take full control to transfer money.
Real Example
A caller claiming to be a payment app's customer support asks the victim to install a screen-sharing app to "resolve a failed transaction." Once connected, the scammer opens the victim's banking app and transfers funds while the victim watches helplessly.
Red Flags 🚩
- Any unsolicited request to install a screen-sharing or remote-access app
- Caller wants to "see your screen" to fix a banking or tech issue
- Pressure to act quickly, often while already on the call
- Request comes from someone who contacted you first, not the other way around
Protection Steps 🛡️
- Never install screen-sharing apps based on instructions from an unsolicited caller.
- Legitimate customer support can typically resolve issues without taking control of your device.
- If you must verify something, hang up and call the company's official number yourself.
- Uninstall any remote-access app immediately if you suspect you've been scammed, and contact your bank.
