Tech Support Scam

Part of Tech & Cyber Scams

How It Works

A pop-up or phone call claims to be from a big tech company like Microsoft, saying your computer has a virus. The "technician" asks for remote access to "fix" it — and instead installs malware or steals your banking details and passwords.

Real Example

Pop-up on screen: "Your computer is infected! Call Microsoft Support now: 1800-xxx-xxxx." Calling connects you to a scammer who asks to install AnyDesk for "repair," then empties your bank account.

Red Flags 🚩

  • Unexpected pop-up claiming virus infection
  • Caller claiming to be Microsoft/Apple/Norton support
  • Asking to install remote access app
  • Demanding payment for "computer repair"

Protection Steps 🛡️

  • Real companies never call you about a virus first.
  • Never install remote access apps for strangers.
  • Close the pop-up, don't call the number shown.
  • Use only official, verified antivirus software.
