How It Works
Around festivals like Diwali, Holi, or New Year, scammers send festive greeting messages or e-cards via WhatsApp/email containing a malicious link. Clicking it can install malware on your device or lead to a phishing page designed to steal your information.
Real Example
WhatsApp forward: "Happy Diwali! Click here to see your personalized Diwali greeting card 🎇 [link]" — the link installs malware or redirects to a fake page asking for personal details.
Red Flags 🚩
- Unexpected greeting card link from an unfamiliar sender or forwarded chain message
- Link uses a shortened or unfamiliar URL
- Message arrives in bulk forwards just before major festivals
- Asks you to enter personal details to "view" the card
Protection Steps 🛡️
- Avoid clicking links in unsolicited festival greeting forwards.
- Send festival wishes through text or known, trusted greeting apps instead.
- Don't enter personal details just to view a greeting card.
- Keep your phone's security software updated, especially during festival seasons.
