Online Auction Non-Delivery Scam

Part of Shopping & E-commerce Scams

How It Works

Scammers list desirable items — electronics, collectibles, even tickets — on auction or classified sites at attractive prices, collect payment from the highest bidder or buyer, and then never ship the item, often disappearing or blocking the buyer afterward.

Real Example

A buyer wins an "auction" for a discounted smartphone and pays upfront as instructed. The seller stops responding immediately after payment, and the listing disappears from the site entirely.

Red Flags 🚩

  • Seller insists on payment before any shipping or tracking details are shared
  • Listing or seller profile is brand new with no reviews or history
  • Price is noticeably lower than market value for a "genuine reason"
  • Seller avoids platform-protected payment methods, pushing for direct bank transfer

Protection Steps 🛡️

  • Use the platform's built-in payment and buyer-protection system instead of direct transfers.
  • Check seller history, ratings, and reviews before bidding or paying.
  • Be cautious of brand-new accounts selling high-value items.
  • Report non-delivery promptly to the platform for a possible refund.
