How It Works
Scammers call claiming to be debt collectors pursuing an old, often non-existent or already-settled debt. They use aggressive, threatening language — sometimes claiming legal action or arrest — to pressure victims into paying immediately, often through untraceable methods like prepaid cards or instant transfers.
Real Example
A caller claims you owe ₹35,000 on an old credit card you don't recognize, threatening legal notice within 24 hours unless you pay immediately via UPI.
Red Flags 🚩
- Aggressive, threatening tone demanding immediate payment
- Refuses to send any written/official documentation of the debt
- Debt is for an account or loan you don't recognize
- Demands payment via UPI, gift card, or wire transfer only
Protection Steps 🛡️
- Ask for written validation of the debt — legitimate collectors must provide this.
- Verify directly with the bank or lender named, using their official contact details.
- Never pay a debt collector via untraceable methods like gift cards.
- Know your rights — collectors cannot threaten arrest for a civil debt.
